Gorakhpur Set for Major Makeover with Thematic Sculptures and Cultural Streetscape

Gorakhpur: Gorakhpur is preparing for a striking urban transformation as the Uttar Pradesh government moves ahead with an ambitious beautification project aimed at turning the city’s roads into vibrant cultural landmarks. Under the vision of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, major road dividers and intersections across the Smart City will soon feature thematic sculptures inspired by music, yoga, spirituality, wildlife, and Indian heritage.

The project, which will be developed under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, is expected to redefine Gorakhpur’s image as a modern yet culturally rooted city. According to Mayor Dr. Manglesh Srivastava, the initiative is designed not only to improve urban aesthetics but also to create a memorable visual identity for residents and visitors alike.

Officials said the proposal has already been presented before the Chief Minister, and after receiving approval from the municipal corporation board, groundwork for the project is set to begin within the next month.

Speaking about the initiative, the Mayor said that road dividers in Gorakhpur will no longer remain limited to greenery and landscaping. Instead, they will evolve into artistic and cultural spaces reflecting India’s traditions and contemporary urban aspirations. Sculptures depicting national symbols, musical instruments, yoga postures, and spiritual themes will be installed across key routes, blending civic infrastructure with cultural storytelling.

The project aims to transform Gorakhpur’s major roads into visually engaging corridors that celebrate Indian identity while enhancing the experience of commuters, tourists, and pilgrims visiting the city. Decorative lighting has already been introduced along several routes, and the upcoming installations will further elevate the city’s appearance with artistic structures surrounded by flowering plants and landscaped greenery.

Under the first phase of the project, different routes will receive unique thematic designs. The divider stretch from Padleganj to Nauka Vihar will showcase sculptures inspired by musical instruments, while the Asuran Chowk to Gulariha route will feature yoga and spirituality-themed installations. Dividers from Yatayat Tiraha to Bargadwa will also carry spiritual motifs, whereas the Deoria Bypass Road near the zoo corridor will be developed around an animal and wildlife theme.

The thematic development work will be carried out by Indian Art Advertising Private Limited. The company’s director, Krishna Mohan, stated that all required no-objection certificates (NOCs) from relevant departments have already been obtained and the project execution will begin shortly. He added that alongside the sculptures, extensive floral plantation and landscaping work will also be undertaken to further enhance the cityscape.

The company will additionally maintain the project for the next 30 years, ensuring long-term upkeep and preservation of the installations.

City officials believe the initiative will strengthen Gorakhpur’s identity as a clean, organized, and culturally vibrant urban centre, creating public spaces that go beyond functionality and become attractions in themselves.
